Coachella is less a genre festival than a small city that happens to have stages. Two consecutive three-day weekends bring the same bill to the Empire Polo Club, a grass field in the Colorado Desert outside Indio: pop and R&B headliners, rock, hip-hop, Latin, indie, and a large electronic program across the main Coachella Stage, the Outdoor Theatre, and tents such as Sahara and Yuma. Music runs from early afternoon past midnight, and there is as much to see in the art installations and the food as on the posters. This is not an electronic festival, and the dance sets are only one part of a deliberately broad booking. The trade-offs are well known. April days are hot and dry and the nights turn cold; dust and long walks between stages are the norm; camping is a serious undertaking with strict rules and no RVs; and the 2027 advance sale has already closed, so most people will go through the official waitlist or resale. Everything is expensive and there are no single-day passes. The saving grace is that the same lineup plays twice, so a Weekend 2 ticket is a second chance at whatever you missed. That redundancy, plus the production scale and the breadth of the booking, is why Coachella remains the reference point for American festivals.
